T2? Not Q2? Yes, we call them “Tertials” – 4 month blocks instead of 3… this lines up better with the natural flow of our industry. Plus, with all this AI stuff, keeping the “T” front and center (for Terminator, of course) just felt right!
I just spent a week Up North — no laptop, no meetings, just a notebook, quiet trails, and some space to think (and grow a mediocre beard).
Between the stillness and the fresh air, clarity comes back and you can regain your focus.
Your business will only grow as intentionally as you lead it.
The start of T2 isn’t just another stretch on the calendar. It’s the hinge — the point between the fresh energy of a new year and the push toward year-end results. It’s where entrepreneurial business owners pause, zoom out, and ask the questions that keep growth on track and goals aligned with reality.
You’re building something. You’re leading something. You’re trying to create a business that gives back time, freedom, and purpose — not just income.
At SPM & Co, we’ve seen it time and again: the businesses that create real momentum don’t react to their numbers — they lead from them.
Three Questions That Define T2
This time of year has a way of bringing clarity — if you’re willing to stop and look for it. And no matter what industry you’re in, the best leaders we work with are asking versions of these questions right now:
- What story are my numbers really telling — and am I leading from it, or just looking back at it?
Your financials aren’t just a report — they’re a reflection of where things are headed. Too many business owners react to financials after the fact. Leadership means spotting trends early, getting ahead of issues, making proactive calls, interpretting the story to make confident decisions, and acting before you’re forced to. - Where is my next strategic move — Where are the real opportunities (or risks) that need a decision before T3 — and what decision needs to happen now to capture it?
Good businesses identify opportunities. Great ones act on them — early. T2 is your window to fine-tune what’s working and pivot where needed. It is time to reallocate, reprioritize, or even pull the plug on what’s not working. Momentum doesn’t wait. A good decision now beats a perfect one too late. - What systems, people, or capacity gaps will strain if I don’t shore them up now?
Growth tends to stress-test what’s been ignored. Whether it’s workflow, bandwidth, or leadership structure, now’s the time to fix the friction. Zoom out and ensure your foundation is ready to support scale.
Why This Reflection Matters
Companies that take time to reassess and realign (quarterly or “tertially”) grow faster —than those that only review strategy annually. That’s not theory — it’s what we see in practice every day: intentional check-ins drive better outcomes.
Why? Because business isn’t static. Circumstances shift, teams evolve, clients change — and waiting until year-end to adapt is like steering a boat after it’s already on the rocks.
This mindset shift is what separates owners from entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs lead intentionally — “on purpose, with purpose” — is my definition of intentional.
They build in structure, seek clarity, and invest ahead of the curve — not after something breaks.
What We’re Seeing From Clients Who Are Gaining Ground
The businesses building steady, strategic momentum right now are doing a few things differently:
- They’ve clarified their role.
They’re stepping further into ownership and leadership — and out of the weeds. That often means delegating more, trusting their team, and letting go of the urge to hold everything. - They’ve strengthened the backbone.
Whether it’s upgrading systems, streamlining reporting, or putting better rhythms in place — they’re making sure the business can carry more weight without buckling. - They’ve found the right partners.
Not just service providers, but true advisors — advisors who can challenge assumptions, bring outside perspective; advisors who help them think clearer, act faster, and navigate growth with more confidence.
This is where strategy becomes more than compliance — it becomes a tool for leadership.
What You Can Do With This Tertial
If you haven’t taken time to reflect yet, it’s not too late. Take a page out of my week away. Start with this:
- Take a Buffer Day
Take a real day off. No email. No phone. Get lost in the woods. Go out on the boat. Walk the beach. Something that takes you away. Let your brain rest. - Take half a day (a whole day is to much for this level of deep work)
Step out of the day-to-day. Look at your numbers, your goals, and your team with fresh perspective. - Ask sharper questions.
Skip the surface-level metrics. Ask: Are we where we thought we’d be? What’s getting in the way? Where/ what is the one constraint that we need to solve? What needs a decision — not another meeting? Is our current direction aligned with the business we want a year from now. - Build your support system.
Whether it’s people, process, or partnership — growth is a team sport. The right support can save you months of friction and give you back the headspace you need to lead. If you’re carrying too much alone, it’s time to shift that. Get the systems, people, and partners in place who can support your next level.
Lead With Intention
The mountains were a good reset, the view was nice.
But the view from intentional growth? Even better!
